Located in the Great Hall, this electrifying exhibit explores the good vibrations that have complemented NASCAR over the last five decades. From rock stars to country crooners to rappers, the sport has welcomed all genres of music to rally around the action on the track.
Musical roots run deep in the sport. From musicians who have used NASCAR sponsorships to promote their records to NASCAR's influence on chart-topping hits, the worlds of NASCAR and music have formed a special bond over the years. And NASCAR’s biggest stars have even found their way into the music scene as performers, music video stars, or by collecting music-themed trophies and memorabilia.
The exhibit explores four primary areas of interest including “Racers Who Rock,” “Rockers Who Race,” “Rocking the Track” and “NASCAR in Song” and features more than 40 artifacts that truly rock including seven cars all the way from Pit Road to Music Row.
NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Junior Johnson honed his driving skills running moonshine in the hills of North Carolina, skills that would later make him a successful NASCAR driver. Braid Paisley’s “Old Alabama” music video featured this 1959 Chevrolet Corvette and was filmed where Hendrick Motorsports team owner Rick Hendrick houses his private car collection. Robbins was a country legend and a part-time race car driver from 1966 to 1982. He was also a legend at the Grand Old Opry. This car is typical of what Robbins drove at Nashville in the 1960s. Mike Curb, the founder and chairman of Curb Records, has had multifaceted success as a songwriter, producer and owner. Through his sponsorship and ownership of NASCAR cars and teams, he also had a trackside view of some of the sport’s biggest moments. As president and CEO of Big Machine Label Group, Scott Borchetta represents some of country music’s biggest stars, but he always had roots in racing. He grew up racing bicycle motocross and quarter midgets and then moved up to the NASCAR weekly series, where he ran the Super Trucks at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. Rascal Flatts’ song “Red Camaro” led to a crossover between NASCAR, music and TV. This red camaro was featured on an episode of the show “Inside West Coast Customs” in 2011. Target’s already established sponsorship of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing’s No. 42 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car provided a unique opportunity for Taylor Swift. The paint scheme shown here was used at Kansas Speedway in October 2012 to promote the release of a deluxe version of her album “Red” that was available exclusively at Target.
