2013 First-time Nominee Feature of the Week – Anne B. France

Folks may wonder why Mrs. France appears on the list of Nominees for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Well let me share some background about Anne B. France with you! The running of NASCAR actually was handled by the team of Mr. and Mrs. Bill France. “Big Bill” was the president, figurehead and ambassador of the sport. He was always out front in the public eye. Anne, however, was always in the background selling tickets, keeping the books and generally taking care of the business of NASCAR. She made sure all the paperwork was correct for the race sanctions, memberships and race sponsorships. Anne made sure that the purse for each race was paid as well as NASCAR salaries and the general bills of the business. She was the rudder of the ship, if you will. Most fans did not know of Mrs. France and that was the way she wanted it. She did her job from the background, never wanting any attention. In fact, her first visit to the pit area of a speedway came in September 1985 at Darlington after nearly 50 years in the business of auto racing. This tireless and dedicated lady kept things going for many decades earning her place on the list.
